Why Does My Baby Cry?
Out of all mammals, human babies are the least evolved at birth. Their initial development happens outside the uterus which makes human babies really vulnerable and unable to deal with any kind of stress. That’s why babies cry often. It’s their only way to let their parents know something is amiss. And it’s not just about being hungry, tired, or needing a fresh diaper. Very often, babies need to feel safe in their parents‘ arms. They need a warm human touch.
Reasons Why Babies Cry
They may be tired. Or cold or hot. They might be hurting or needing a diaper change. Or they might suffer from overstimulation — too much noise, bright lights, unusual smells, sudden movements. Some babies just don’t feel safe when you lay them down.
Understanding why your baby cries is never easy. They say parents get better at it over time, while they get to know their baby better. That said, there will always be situations in which you won’t know the true reason for a cry. It doesn’t make you a bad parent! As so many experienced parents confirm, sometimes you just don’t have a clue. Absolutely normal.
The Reason Your Baby Cries Actually Doesn’t Matter
The only thing that matters is your reaction to your baby crying. Keep this in mind. You should always react when your baby cries — only then your baby develops correct reactions to stress. For life.
Babies Cry When They Need You
Babies don’t cry to work out their lungs and voice. They don’t want to manipulate you and they’re not being spoiled. They just need you because something is wrong and they need you to make it go away. Babies need your help to learn about their feelings and sensations — their brain is not developed enough for them to deal with all this on their own.
You Won’t Spoil Your Baby by Comforting Them!
It’s the other way round. The more you react to your baby crying, the more effectively your child will deal with stress in the future. By addressing their needs, you let your children know you’re here for them. Always.
Long-Term Stress Is Always Bad
For everyone. Once in a while, a good cry does no harm. But a long, neglected cry, often repeated, is detrimental for your baby’s health, both physically and mentally. Never let your baby „cry it out“ as some of your relatives may be advising. „Crying it out“ increases harmful stress hormones — a baby’s brain is very vulnerable to them. Address your baby’s needs, make them feel safe again. Tending to your crying baby makes their stress hormones drop back to normal. A baby who is let to „cry it out“ has stress hormones going through the roof. Doing that long-term damages their brain cells and their immune system.
All Babies Need to Be Looked After
A crying baby needs to be comforted. Physically and mentally. Touch your baby, hold them, caress them. Your touch releases the good hormones — the ones responsible for feeling safe and happy.
Our Tip: A cuddly baby blanket can help your baby feel safe and comfortable. Made of super soft bamboo.
