Nursing Pads: A Must-Have for Every Breastfeeding Mum

A Must-Have for Every Breastfeeding Mum: Nursing Pads

Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing, but it's not as easy as it seems. It’s absolutely OK to struggle, especially at the beginning. Read on to find out how you can make your breastfeeding easier.

Wet patches on the chest are quite a common side effect of breastfeeding, especially at its onset. These so-called “milk leaks” might come back once again when you try to wean your baby — skipping a feeding interval may result not only in you being uncomfortable but also wet patches materialising on your chest once again. The remedy against these is really simple: nursing pads!

Drugstores and pharmacies commonly offer disposable nursing pads as an aid for breastfeeding mums. These are of medium absorbency and have no waterproof layer. They look pretty much like cleansing pads — simple flat circles. Especially heavier-chested women might find them not very effective and likely to “travel” or fold in their bra. As the name “disposable” suggests, you just throw them in the trash once you’ve used them.

Reusable Nursing Pads

We don't like disposable things here at Bamboolik! Especially when a reusable alternative is available, realistic, and easy to use. That's why we came up with washable nursing pads for breastfeeding mums. They have three advantages over disposable nursing pads:

  • They’re eco-friendly. No need to throw them away after every use.
  • They're budget-friendly. You're not literally throwing your money in the bin each time you use them. Get just a few pairs and rotate them.
  • They’re functional. That means very absorbent and with a waterproof layer.

We use super soft bamboo terry for our nursing pads (bamboo is about four times more absorbent than cotton!). Or you can pick the luxurious organic cotton version. We have developed a special cut for our nursing pads — they’re shaped, with darts, so they follow the shape of your breasts better and stay in place. A win-win especially for moms with larger breasts!

Our bamboo terry breastfeeding pads come in two variants:

Nursing pads with a waterproof layer made of so-called PUL on the outside: PUL is a laminated (but still breathable) polyester that ensures the nursing pads do not leak onto your clothes.

Nursing pads with water-repellent StayDry fleece layer on the outside. Suitable for those not so concerned about milk leaks, who put a great emphasis on breathability.

While our organic cotton pads only come with the waterproof PUL layer, as they were designed especially for the postpartum period when the milk production is usually all over the place.

Maintenance of Reusable Nursing Pads

It’s really quite simple: just wash your nursing pads in the washing machine at 60°C, you can even tumble dry them. Nothing extra strenuous compared to disposable pads, right?

P.S.: Next week, we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week in Europe. All the more reason to get a pair to try on right now, or perhaps make a gift for your breastfeeding friend or sister with our beautiful recycled cardboard gift pack. Plus, until the end of this week, you can get our nursing pads with a generous autumn discount!
