Potty Training Pants & Trainer Panties — How to Master Toilet Training
Summer is the best time for potty training attempts! But how to approach it? Should you get your toddler potty training pants or trainer panties, or should you give things a free rein? Here’s our tips on toilet training.
When Is It the Right Time to Start with Potty Training?
Every child is different and every child has their own pace. Not many babies under 18 months manage to get potty trained (there are exceptions, as in everything, but they’re pretty rare). Most kids master the potty (or the toilet) around the 3 year mark. Plus minus a few months.
You’re your baby’s parents, so it should be your call to start with potty training — you know your child the best. Not your mother in law. That said, there are a few more or less objective signs that your toddler is potty-ready:
- They pee several times a day in quite large doses. That means they don’t pee a little every half-an-hour or so.
- When it comes to number 2, potty-ready children will hide somewhere, seeking some privacy.
It’s very likely that mastering the poo-potty will come first and pee will follow, maybe in 6 months, maybe in a year. Perfectly normal.

How to Potty Train a Toddler
There are many methods and recommendations! And as every child is different, various methods may work. What worked well for an older sibling may not go so well with a younger child and vice versa.
- Some parents recommend seating your baby in the potty regularly as soon as possible, to get them used to it.
- Some swear by the Elimination Communication Method.
Some praise the natural potty training method.
Training Pants & Trainer Panties
Whatever method you end up choosing (or you invent a new one, completely your own), there are some potty training products that make your life easier. Training Pants are a gentle transition from diapers, Trainer Panties are meant for children who have already mastered the potty but need a back-up from time to time before fully committing to regular underwear.
Training Pants for Easy Potty Training
The very first potty training step! Training Pants resemble both diapers (when it comes to absorbing capacity), and underwear (when it comes to using the potty/ toilet). They come in three sizes and can be pulled down and up when your toddler goes to the potty. The absorbing inserts inside mimick the child’s progress with the potty — beginners would benefit from a long absorbing insert, more advanced potty-trainees will be OK with just a short absorbing insert.
The game-changing benefit of Training Pants is that the wet insert can be changed without having to lay your baby down and take off their pants and shoes. Training Pants can be unsnapped, pulled between the legs and then returned the same way with a fresh insert. With your child still standing.
Trainer Panties
The last step before fully embracing big girl’s/ boy’s underwear! Trainer Panties have an integrated absorbing layer, so therę’s really no difference between them and regular underwear. They are meant to hold in small accidents which makes them the ideal choice for kids who have already mastered the potty but need some back-up in complicated situations (such as longer car rides or the afternoon nap).
